Moon Man (Film)
Overview
Moon Man is a Chinese science fiction comedy film produced by Mahua Funage in collaboration with China Film Group and Alibaba Pictures. The film was released in mainland theaters in multiple formats, including Imax. It is directed by Zhang Chiyu and stars Shen Teng, one of China's most beloved comedians, alongside Ma Li, marking their reunion after the success of Goodbye Mr. Loser. The film is an adaptation of South Korean illustrator Cho Seok's popular comic series Moon You.
Plot Summary
The narrative of Moon Man revolves around Dugu Yue, a spacecraft maintenance worker left stranded on the moon after an unexpected evacuation of the Lunar Shield crew, a project initially designed to save Earth from an asteroid collision. Dugu, believing Earth has been decimated and he is the last human alive, is unaware that his every action is being monitored by the surviving humans on Earth, including the crew's leader, Ma Lanxing, whom he has secretly admired for years.
On the lunar surface, Dugu encounters a kangaroo, which becomes his only companion. The kangaroo, portrayed through digital motion-capture technology by comedian Hao Han, adds comedic relief as it assists Dugu in his efforts to return to Earth. The film intertwines the solitary life of Dugu on the moon with the poignant human connections that persist, despite the distance.
Production
The film features approximately 1,800 special effects scenes, crafted by More VFX, known for their work on "The Wandering Earth" and "A Writer's Odyssey." Filming took place over nearly five months, utilizing 15 soundstages sprawling over 40,000 square meters in Qingdao, Shandong province. Shen Teng described the shooting process as an immersive experience, spending extensive periods in soundstages with green cloth-covered walls for backdrop replacement.
The film incorporated digital motion-capture technology and green screen techniques extensively, allowing for the creation of complex visual effects that depict the lunar environment and the interactions between Dugu and the kangaroo. Director Zhang Chiyu emphasized the importance of comedy within the film, stating that while technological elements serve as the film’s backdrop, the comedic performances drive its essence.
